On Friday 9 November, AV学院 will host its third Business Breakfast, bringing together the Perth business community for a morning with Mr Richard Goyder AO. The event Chair will be Mr Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC and the breakfast will take place at the State Reception Centre, in the beautiful grounds of Kings Park.

Ahead of the event, Mr Fred Chaney AO took time to discuss his motivation for attending this event each year. 鈥淚 attended the first Carmel Business Breakfast because of my deep respect and admiration for Mr Mark Leibler AC, who was the keynote,鈥� said Mr Chaney. 鈥淚 am indebted to Mark for his work with our Indigenous communities, which has benefitted so many. His messages about Indigenous matters are powerful,鈥� added Mr Chaney.

Mark Leibler AC was the first keynote in the Carmel Business Breakfast series, speaking in 2018, followed by the Hon Mathias Cormann (then Senator and Minister for Finance, Special Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the Senate) in 2019. In 2020, the School hit pause on the series due to the pandemic and the response to the 2021 event has been very strong, with just under 250 tickets booked.

鈥淚 have booked again for 2021,鈥� says Mr Chaney. 鈥淭here are a number of reasons that I have returned to this event each time it has run. Primarily, I am keen to support the Perth Jewish Community. Discrimination of any kind is repugnant in my view, and I stand in solidarity with any community that experiences it, as is unfortunately the case with the Jewish community who must still deal with antisemitism. I also admire the School for its academic excellence, the students I have met have been impressive and I think the Principal is terrific,鈥� he said. 鈥淢y positive association with the Perth Jewish community extends back to the early 1960s when I formed relationships with two outstanding lawyers who went on to have distinguished careers and were strong supporters of Indigenous rights. I think there is a strong correlation between the meaning of homeland for the Jewish population and Indigenous Australians and I find this an interesting similarity between the cultures,鈥� added Mr Chaney.

Event host, Mr Jonathon Silbert, Carmel Foundation Chair, says 鈥減eople register and attend this event for many and varied reasons and I really admire and am grateful for Mr Chaney鈥檚 reflections. The goal of our series is to bring to Perth speakers of note, adding to our business community a dialogue that allows for rich and deep knowledge transfer.鈥� Mr Silbert added 鈥渋t is also our goal, as a community, to share our knowledge and expertise widely, to bring together people from broad backgrounds to discuss topics of common interest and to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas and networks.鈥�
